Tilly is a charming little tortoise who is snug-as-a-bug in her shell. She is a timeless toy that’s great for baby showers or toddler gifts or made into a memory keepsake using pre-loved clothing items.
Is there a Photo tutorial for the Tortoise Pattern?
YES! I have created a step-by-step photo tutorial so you can see EXACTLY how to sew this cute Tortoise Toy Pattern – with lots of clever toy making tips and tricks! As usual, you can access the tutorial using the link in the See-Me-Sew section of the pattern.

What fabric should I use/not use for a Tilly?
The Tilly Tortoise Toy Pattern can be sewn out of MOST fabrics including quilting cottons. The testers made her in all sorts of fun fabrics – from fluffy Cuddle to denim and ‘pleather’/non-leather fabrics. Here you can see Paula Blevins sewed this sweet pink Tilly Tortoise from fleece and Cuddle – she looks like she’s wearing a fluffy jacket!🧡
Tester’s Tip:
Don’t use THICK
or VERY FLUFFY fabric
for the BODY or Tilly won’t fit in her shell!
Elizabeth Percival of Dolli-mixtures Keepsakes sewed Tilly Tortoise as a keepsake toy. She used a shirt and denim. This is a wonderful way to repurpose old jeans but denim is thick and not an easy fabric for beginners.
This Tilly Tortoise was sewn by Caroline Savage using flannelette fabric. Here is Tilly hanging out in her sewing room….
And in the great outdoors!!!
Here we have another sweet Tilly Tortoise sewn with denim and cute cotton prints, by Patricia Medina – hanging out among the flowers!
And Natalie Booysen sewed this fantastic faux leather (‘pleather’) Tilly Tortoise . I love the leather look on the tortoise’s shell!
A tortoise toy looks good in ANY colour!
Janet Radke‘s Tilly Tortoise looks ‘GORGEOUS in GREENS’… especially hanging out in her garden!
Jane Tate sewed this BRILLIANT BLUE batik version of Tilly Tortoise.
This cute Valentines Tilly Tortoise was sewn in PRETTY PINKS by Almira S. ~>

What SIZE is the finished Tilly Tortoise toy?
Tilly is 31cm (12inches) long and 22cm (9inches) ‘tall’. You can get an idea of the size of the finished Tilly Tortoise Toy Pattern in this next photo…. Joan Kawano sewed TWO cute Tilly Tortoises for her grandson!
AND here is another well-loved gift Tilly Tortoise sewn by Kathryn-Dickinson for her daughter!💙💗
Tilly makes a great Baby Keepsake Toy!
Here are TWO beautiful baby keepsake toys sewn by Mary-Anne Potgieter. These terrific Tilly Tortoises look so cute sitting out on a picnic blanket!
If you look closely…
you can see that Mary-Anne has embroidered the name of the receiver on the large space on the side of Tilly Tortoise’s shell!
AND last BUT not LEAST!!!
One more outdoor shot! This Tilly Tortoise sewn by Holly Boatright seems to have found a vacation home on the beach! 😁
