Penguin sewing pattern

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.

It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Penny Penguin Sewing Pattern can SEE how to sew my penguin toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Penguin Sewing Pattern

First choose some penguin fabric:

Penguins don’t have to be
black and white!

CHEST & TUMMY:

STEP 1

Sew the CHEST PIECE to the TUMMY PIECE.

penguin tutorial originalm photoss

TIP: Use lots of pins to stop wrinkles when you sew this seam.

WINGS:

STEP 2a

Sew the WING PIECES right sides together leaving the straight edge open for turning.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-019

TIP: Trim the seam allowance at the pointed tip of the wings and clip the seams around the curves so you can turn them out nicely.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-021

STEP 2b

Turn the WING PIECES right sides out.

* Do NOT stuff the WINGS.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-026

STEP 3

Pin the WINGS in position on the BODY PIECES as shown by the pattern markings. Use the Wing Pinning Diagram to check to make sure that the dots on the WING PIECES are towards the front.

TIP: Check that the tip of each wing points to the back!

STEP 4a

Pin and sew the SHOULDER PIECES to the BODY PIECES, with the WINGS in between, matching point B and the dots of the pattern markings.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-040

STEP 4b

Pin the seams you just sewed so that they lie flat on (towards) the SHOULDER PIECES.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-042

STEP 4c

Sew the seam allowance to the SHOULDER PIECES with a line of top-stitching 3mm (1/8th of an inch) above the seam . This makes the wing seams nice and strong.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-047

STEP 5

Sew the BODY & SHOULDER PIECES to the TUMMY & CHEST PIECE along the side seam. Sew them together on one side first, then repeat on the other side of the TUMMY & CHEST PIECE.

TIP: Pin the WINGS out of the way when you sew so you don’t catch them in the seams.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(6)

STEP 6

Sew the BODY PIECES together at the back seam, from A to B, leaving the gap for stuffing as shown on the pattern markings.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(14)

TAIL:

STEP 7a

Sew the TAIL PIECES, right sides together leaving the edge open for turning as shown on the pattern markings. Trim the seam allowance at the pointed tip of the TAIL PIIECES.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-032

STEP 7b

Turn the TAIL PIECES right sides out. Pin the straight edge of the TAIL closed.

* Do not stuff the TAIL.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-034

BASE:

STEP 8

Pin the TAIL to the BASE PIECE at the back, using the pattern markings to guide you.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(19)

TIP: Baste/tack the TAIL in place by hand or sew it with a 3mm (1/8th of an inch) seam on the sewing machine. This will stop the TAIL PIECES from slipping as you sew the BASE PIECE in place later on.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(23)

FOOT PIECES:

STEP 9a

Sew the FOOT PIECES together in pairs leaving the straight edge open for turning.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(35)

TIP: Change the thread to use a matching colour before sewing the FOOT and BEAK PIECES.

STEP 9b

Trim the seam allowance at the pointed tips of the ‘toes’, clip the seams around the curves of the FOOT PIECES and between the ‘toes’. This is important to do otherwise the FOOT PIECES will not turn out nicely.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(46)

STEP 9c

Turn the FOOT PIECES right sides out.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(48)

TIP: Use a sharp object like a wooden chopstick to push the ‘toes’ out properly so they form nice points!

STEP 9d

Pin the edge of the feet nice and flat, then sew around the edge of the FOOT PIECES, using a 5mm (¼inch) seam allowance to create a nice flattened seam around the feet.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(49)

STEP 9e

Stuff the FOOT PIECES with a little bit of toy stuffing and pin the opening closed.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(55)

STEP 10

Pin the FOOT PIECES to the BODY PIECES as shown on the pattern markings.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(58)

TIP: Baste/tack the FOOT PIECES in place by hand or with a 3mm (1/8th of an inch) seam on the sewing machine to stop them from slipping as you sew them in place later on.

* One FOOT is sewn on with orange thread and
one with blue thread because I had to unpick as I had sewn
one FOOT in the wrong spot!!! 😀

BEAK:

STEP 11a

Sew the BEAK TOP PIECES together matching the dots of the pattern markings.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(26)

STEP 11b

Sew the BEAK TOP PIECES to the BEAK BASE PIECE.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(34)

CHEEKS:

STEP 12

Using a matching thread, sew the felt CHEEK PIECES to the HEAD PIECES (by hand or machine) using the pattern markings to guide you.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(66)

HEAD:

STEP 13

*You can change your thread back to match the main fabric now!

Sew the HEAD PIECES together at the top from C – D.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(70)

BEAK:

STEP 14

Turn the BEAK PIECES right sides out. Pin and sew the BEAK PIECES to the HEAD PIECES, matching point D.

* I find it much easier pin and sew one side first…

BEAK-COLLAGE-PENGUIN-2

…then pin and sew on the other side.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(83)

TIP: This seam can be a difficult seam for a beginner to sew on a sewing machine. I recommend sewing this seam by hand (with a tight back stitch).

STEP 15

Sew the HEAD PIECES and the BEAK BASE PIECE closed at the centre from F – E.

EYES:

STEP 16

If you are using craft eyes insert them now.

* I added some large felt circles (behind the craft eyes) to add a fun look!

inserting craft eyes

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog. Click the picture below to check it out!

BASE:

STEP 17a

Pin the BASE PIECE to the TUMMY & BACK PIECES, with the FOOT PIECES and the TAIL PIECES in between.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(98)

STEP 17b

Sew the BASE PIECE in place with the body in a ‘standing position’. (This is so that you can keep an eye out for wrinkles and smooth them out as you sew).

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(100)

NECK SEAM:

STEP 18

Sew the HEAD PIECES to the SHOULDER & CHEST PIECES at the neck seam.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(110)

TIP: I find the easiest way to do this is to turn the HEAD right sides out and push it inside the BODY.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(109)

STEP 19

Sew the HEAD and SHOULDER PIECES closed from C – G – B.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(111)

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 20

Turn your penguin right sides out through the gap left on the BODY PIECES.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(113)

STEP 21a

Stuff the BEAK quite firmly, then fill the rest of the head very firmly. If you are embroidering the eyes, do them now.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(116)

STEP 21b

Stuff the neck area firmly, then fill the base area well, then finish stuffing the rest of the body with toy stuffing.

Penguin-original-photo-tutorial-photos-B-(114)

STEP 22

Sew the stuffing gap closed with a ladder stitch.
