I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Patch Cat Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!
*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.
This is NOT A FREE PATTERN.I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this stuffed toy Cat! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Patch Pussy Cat sewing pattern!)
*The pattern is available to purchase here – Patch PUSSY CAT Sewing Pattern
I designed this cute patchwork pussy cat because Tula Pink asked me to! It’s true! She wanted to make some cats for her booth at Quilt Market… and since I love cats and Tula Pink’s fabrics… I said, ‘SURE!’ 😍 Patch is sewn with a simple straight stitch but this pattern has LOTS of pieces so she is NOT one of my easy patterns – she just takes a little bit longer to make and she’s so cute it’s definitely worth the extra time! 😁
OK, first choose some cat fabric!
I sewed Patch PUSSY CAT from quilting cottons for this photo tutorial…
BUT a patchwork toy will look good in any fabric. Have fun mixing prints/patterns and colours!
Let’s sew a patchwork Cat! 😺
EARS:
STEP 1
Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open. Trim the seam allowance to 3mm (1/8 inch) at the tips, turn the EARS right sides out and pin them closed along the straight edge.
HEAD:
STEP 2
Sew the FACE PIECES to the CHEEK PIECES from A – B.
TIP: Clip these very curved seams really well so the seam will lie nice and flat and the pieces will turn nice and smoothly.
STEP 3
Sew the CHEEK PIECES together from C – D.
(See where the pins are in the photo below)
STEP 4
Pin the EARS to the FACE PIECES, using the dot pattern markings to guide you.
* The fabric you want as the ‘inner ears’ must be pinned facing(touching) the CHEEK PIECES.
STEP 5
Pin and sew the NOSE PIECE to the FOREHEAD PIECE from I – J.
TIP: This seam is right in the middle of your kitty’s face and you want it to be nice and smooth so use LOTS of pins –
…and clip the seam allowance well so it lies perfectly smooth and flat without any wrinkles!!!
STEP 6a
Pin the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES , with the EARS in between them at E. (Use lots of pins to prevent wrinkles!) Here you can see me pinning one side first…
Then I pinned the other half…
STEP 6b
Sew the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES, sew from E – C – E on the other side.
TIP: I like to sew this seam with the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE down so that you can ‘finger-press’ the pieces to smooth out any puckers as you go so you don’t get any wrinkles!
STEP 7
Fold the EARS to the sides, so the straight edge of each EAR lines up with the side seam edge of the FACE PIECES and pin them in this position.
TIP: I like to baste (tack) the EARS in this position so the pins don’t prick me when I sew the rest of the cat’s face.
STEP 8a
Pin the CHIN PIECE to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES on one side, matching M, B and H.
STEP 8b
Sew the CHIN PIECE to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES on this side, stopping at the spot before the edge of the fabric at H.
STEP 9
Pin and sew the CHIN PIECE to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES on the side, and continue sewing the CHEEK PIECES together along the front to D.
DARTS:
STEP 10
Fold the FACE PIECES with the fabric right sides together and sew the darts closed.
EYES:
STEP 11
If you are using craft eyes insert them now. (You don’t have to use cat’s eyes, in fact, I liked my kitty better with plain black eyes!)
TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog. Click the picture below to check it out!
BACK HEAD:
STEP 12
Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES together along the middle seam, leaving the bottom open, as shown by the pattern markings. Finger press this seam open so it lies nice and flat.
STEP 13
Pin and sew the BACK HEAD PIECES to the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES. Sew from G – E – F – E – G on the other side.
TIP: Sew this seam with the BACK HEAD PIECES downwards so you can finger-press the seams open to flatten them as you sew.
CHEST, TUMMY and LEGS:
STEP 14
Sew the TUMMY PIECES together, along the middle seam, leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing.
STEP 15
Sew the CHEST PIECE to the TUMMY PIECES, matching the star pattern mark.
STEP 16
Sew the INNER FRONT LEG PIECES to the CHEST & TUMMY PIECES.
STEP 17
Sew the INNER BACK LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECES.
BODY:
STEP 18
Sew the FRONT BODY PIECES to the BACK BODY PIECES from K – L.
STEP 19
Sew the TAIL PIECES to the BACK BODY PIECES matching point M.
TIP: Double check you have matched point M, or your cat’s tail will be sewn on the wrong way round!
STEP 20
Sew the cat’s body together along the top from W on the BACK BODY PIECES, around the TAIL PIECES, to V on the FRONT BODY PIECES.(Don’t sew to N!)
STEP 21a
Trim the seam allowance to about 3mm around the tip of the TAIL so the TAIL with turn nicely.
STEP 21b
Push the TAIL right sides out by pushing it back ‘inside’ the BACK BODY PIECES. (It’s easier to do this now than when the toy is all sewn up!)
TIP: Use a chopstick to make site the tip of the tail is turned smoothly. Run the chopstick back and forth along the stitching line, inside the TAIL.
SEW THE BODY TOGETHER:
STEP 22
You will pin and sew the CHEST, TUMMY & INNER LEGS to the TAIL, BACK & FRONT BODY PIECES in 3 steps:
Step ONE:
Sew the cat together at the back. Sew the BACK BODY PIECES to the TUMMY & INNER BACK LEG PIECES, matching points W and T.
Step TWO:
Sew the cat together at the front. Sew the FRONT BODY PIECES to the CHEST& INNER FRONT LEG PIECES, matching points O, Q and U on both sides.
Step THREE:
Sew the cat together at the sides. Sew the BACK BODY & FRONT BODY PIECES to the TUMMY, INNER BACK LEG & INNER FRONT LEG PIECES, matching points R,S, and X.
PAWS:
STEP 23
Pin the PAWS to the LEG PIECES matching point X or U and sew them in place.
TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to sew the PAWS/FOOTPADS in place. Click the picture below to check it out!
SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY:
STEP 24
Pin and sew the FACE & CHIN and BACK HEAD PIECES to the CHEST & FRONT BODY PIECES at the neck seam.
TIP: I find the best way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it ‘inside the body’ so you can pin the pieces together at the neck seam, with the fabric right sides together.
STEP 25
Pull the head back out of the body and pin and sew the cat closed along the top of the FRONT BODY PIECES and the middle seam of the BACK HEAD PIECES.
ASSEMBLY:
STEP 26
Turn the cat right sides out through the turning gap in the TUMMY.
STEP 27
Stuff the TAIL first using small pieces of toy stuffing so it is firmly packed and will stand up nice and straight. Stuff the HEAD really well especially the CHEEK area. Stuff the neck, then the legs, and finally the tummy area last.
STEP 28
Cut the NOSE PIECE from felt and pin this in position. Sew the NOSE in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch. If you are embroidering the eyes, sew them now. (You can sew some long stitches for your cat’s whiskers… but I think it looks cute enough without!)
STEP 29
Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the TUMMY PIECES.
Your Pussycat is ready to LOVE!
