I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Kiwi Bird Sewing Pattern can SEE how to sew a dachshund toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Kiwi Bird Sewing Pattern )
First choose some fabric:
STEP 1
You can use most fabrics for Kiri Kiwi but she is really cuddly in fleece and minky.
BODY and BEAK:
STEP 2
Sew the BODY PIECES together from A – B.
STEP 3
Sew the BEAK TOP PIECE to the BODY PIECES, matching point A.
TIP: Use lots of pins. Sew this seam with the BEAK TOP PIECE down so you can smooth out any puckers that might form as you sew.
STEP 4
Sew the TUMMY PIECE to the BASE PIECE, leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing your Kiwi.
STEP 5
Sew the BEAK BASE PIECE to the TUMMY PIECE, matching point E.
WINGS:
STEP 6
Sew 2 of the WING PIECES together, clip the seam allowance at the ‘corners’ and turn the wing right side out. Repeat for the other WING PIECES.
TIP: I use a wooden chopstick to turn the wings nicely so I get them nice and pointy!
STEP 7
Fold the seam allowance in along the straight edge of the WING PIECES and pin them in this position.
STEP 8
Place the WINGS on the right sides of the BODY PIECES using the pattern markings to guide you. Topstitch the WINGS in place, along the front only, using the pattern markings to guide you.
*It’s hard to see so I outlined the wing with a blue line in the photo below!
EYES:
STEP 9
If you are using craft eyes insert them now. (If you are embroidering the eyes, you will sew them after the toy is stuffed.)
TIP: I have a photo tutorial for inserting craft eyes on my blog
~> https://www.funkyfriendsfactory.com/blog/safetyeyes-picture-tutorial-for-great-looking-peepers/
LEGS:
STEP 10
Sew the LEG PIECES together in pairs. Sew from F – G and H – K.
NB* DON’T FORGET to leave a gap for stuffing them later!
TIP: Change your thread to match the fabric of the LEGS so you don’t see a row of
dark stitches on the side of the ‘toes’!
STEP 11
Sew the HEEL PIECES to the TOES PIECES matching point J.
STEP 12
Pin and sew each HEEL&TOES PIECE to the LEG PIECES matching points K and G. (Sew right around without a gap. )
STEP 13
Clip the seams then turn the legs right sides out. Use a wooden chopstick to make sure the seams are turned nicely, especially the ‘toes’. Pin the LEGS closed at the top.
TUMMY and BASE:
STEP 14
Pin the LEGS to the BODY PIECES, matching points F and H, so the ‘toes’ face to the front (where the beak is!). Pin one side of the TUMMY,BASE&BEAK TOP to one BODY PIECE with a LEG in between. Sew from K/L – M.
TIP: Do not sew to the edge of the BASE PIECE at M, stop at the dot pattern marking.
STEP 15
Pin and sew the other side of the TUMMY,BASE&BEAK TOP to the other BODY PIECE with the other LEG in between. Sew from K/L – M.
STEP 16
Sew the BODY PIECES together between M and B.
ASSEMBLY
STEP 17
Lastly, sew around the BEAK. Use lots of pins so it doesn’t slip as you sew.
TIP: TIP: Change your thread to match the fabric of the BEAK PIECES so you don’t see a
row of dark stitches on the beak!
STEP 18
Turn your kiwi bird right sides out.
TIP: Clip the seams especially where they are very curved – like at the ‘neck’ to help it turn more easily. I find it helps to push the beak back inside the body with a chopstick before you turn it right sides out.
STEP 19
Stuff the feet, beak and head nice and firmly with toy stuffing. Use little bits at a time, especially in the beak, to get the stuffing nice and smooth (NOT lumpy!) Fill the rest of the body firmly so it becomes quite round! If you are embroidering the eyes, do them now.
STEP 20
Use a ladder stitch to close the opening between the TUMMY PIECE and BASE PIECE.
