It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Petunia PIG Sewing Pattern can SEE how to sew my pig soft toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Petunia PIG sewing pattern!)

Pig toys don’t need to be pink…

OK, we’ll start with Piggy’s TAIL:

STEP 1

Fold the TAIL PIECE in half and sew along the side seam as shown on the pattern piece. Trim the seam allowance at the tip of the TAIL PIECE and turn the tail right sides out.

1

TIP: I have a blog post to show you how to turn small softie pieces.

STEP 2

Pin the TAIL PIECE in position on the BODY PIECES as shown on the pattern.

pin tail

BODY:

STEP 3

Pin and sew the BODY PIECES together from A – B, with the TAIL in between, leaving a gap for you to push the wire/chenille stick into the tail after you have sewn the BODY PIECES together.

pin BODY

TIP: Here is a close up photo for you to see the gap that must be left for you to insert the wire for the pig’s tail.

3a-tail

STEP 4a

Fold a piece of wire/chenille stick in half.

4

STEP 4b

Push the folded end of the chenille stick into the tail. Trim the ends of the wire so the ends stick out of the tail about 12mm(half an inch).

* I have ‘rolled back’ the top BODY PIECE so you can see
the TAIL PIECE in between.

Do not sew over wire of chenille stick

TIP: Do NOT to sew over the wire/chenille stick – it can damage your needle and your machine. You can even damage your eyes if your needle snaps! I like to fold the ends of the wire to each side and ‘hide’ them in seam.

TIP hide wire in seams

HEAD:

STEP 5a

Sew the CENTRE HEAD PIECE to one SIDE HEAD PIECE, from C – D, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings.

5a

STEP 5b

Sew the CENTRE HEAD PIECE to the other SIDE HEAD PIECE, from C – D.

5b

STEP 6

If you are using craft eyes, insert them now.

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog. Click the picture below to check it out!

STEP 7

Sew the SIDE HEAD PIECES together from E – F.

* I have shown this with a purple arrow in the photo below.

7.side-head-pieces

TIP: This creates a ’round gap’ for the SNOUT PIECE.

*It looks like a triangle shape in the photo below!

8

SNOUT:

STEP 8

Pin the SNOUT PIECE in place, matching F and G. Sew the SNOUT PIECE to the HEAD PIECES by hand. (Use a back stitch and tight stitching.)

8b

Can I sew the SNOUT in place with a sewing machine?

It is much harder to sew the SNOUT PIECE in place by machine but it CAN be done! Add extra pins between the ones you have already pinned. This is so that the SNOUT PIECE cannot slip as you sew it in place. Turn the pieces over and sew them with the SNOUT PIECE down. I have had a LOT of practice doing this, so I recommend sewing it by hand if you are NEW to making soft toys! 😀

8f

UNDERBELLY:

STEP 9

Sew the UNDERBELLY PIECES together at the center, sewing from E – B, leaving a gap as indicated for turning and stuffing your pig.

9

STEP 10

Sew the UNDERBELLY PIECES to the SIDE HEAD PIECES at the neck seam, from H – E – H, and matching the dots of the pattern pieces.

10

EARS:

STEP 11

Place the fabrics for the EAR PIECES right sides together and sew along the sewing line for both ears.

11

STEP 12

Cut out the EAR PIECES with a 5mm/¼ inch seam around this sewing line and turn them right sides out.

11a

STEP 13

Fold the EAR PIECES, using the fold line of the pattern markings to guide you, and pin in this position.

13

STEP 14

Pin the EAR PIECES to the HEAD PIECES, using the pattern markings to guide you.  Baste/tack the EAR PIECES in position with the fold of the EARS facing the front (touching the HEAD PIECES!).

14

STEP 15

Pin the  EARS, HEAD PIECES & BODY PIECES to the UNDERBELLY PIECES, remember – right sides together! 😀

15

TIP: I find this easiest if I do it in 3 steps. First pin the 4 trotters together and pin points A at the front and B at the back. Next I pin the piggy’s together on both sides between the front and back trotters. Lastly I pin the rest of the front and back seams. Use LOTS of pins so the pieces don’t slip as you sew this last seam!

STEP 16

Sew EARS, HEAD PIECES & BODY PIECES to the UNDERBELLY PIECES without leaving a gap.

16

STUFFING and FINISHING:

STEP 17

Trim the seam allowance at the points of the trotters.

STEP 18

Turn your pig right sides out through the gap left on the UNDERBELLY PIECES.

18

STEP 19

Stuff the HEAD with toy stuffing. If you are embroidering the eyes, do them now.

17

TIP: I use a child’s paintbrush to push the toy stuffing into the head nice and firmly.

STEP 20

Fill the arms, and legs with plastic pellets. Do not overfill the arms and legs – they need to flop like a bean bag.

STEP 21

Fill the rest of the body with toy stuffing.

Pig-Photo-tutorial-(116)

Push the toy stuffing into the body of your piggy to fill up the back area nicely…

Pig-Photo-tutorial-(120)

Turn the piggy over to check the body has a nice shape!

* Add more toy stuffing if there are wrinkles in the pig’s  back.

STEP 22

Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the UNDERBELLY PIECES.

STEP 23

Curl the tail to make a characteristic piggy curl.
