Resize a pattern SEWING COMPETITION – WIN a $50 Funky Friends Factory gift certificate!

I LOVE to see my Funky Friends Factory toy patterns sewn in lots of different sizes!

It’s fun to see people sew teeny, TINY versions… as well as HUGE versions of my toys and this is what sparked the idea for

a RE-SIZED Funky Friends Toy Competition!

Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before.

I have created a blog post to answer the question – “how do I enlarge/reduce the size of a toy pattern?”  – because I want to make sure that EVERYONE feels confident sewing ANY size soft toy!!!!! There are FULL INSTRUCTIONS and RE-SIZING TIPS in the bog post. (Plus, EVERY entry has an equal chance of winning because and the winner will be drawn from ALL the re-sized toys entered).

And now for some cool
RE-SIZED
TOY pics
to inspire you!

Alyssa King of Snugglysoft Designs sews heaps of HUGE Funky Friends toys. While I wouldn’t advise you start off with a 200% toy on your first try (I’ve actually never made one anywhere close to that big), they’re certainly fun to see! Here’s a gigantic Puppy Pete with her son… at 200% (that’s twice the normal pattern size… it’s a lot bigger than you’d expect, isn’t it?!!).

the Easter Bunny Buddy with her kids…  or should I say – ALMOST A BIG as her kids!

…and a mega versions of Slowpoke Sloth with her daughter and herself. Talk about great childhood memories… I bet Alyssa’s kids will always remember these larger-than-life fuzzy friends!

How about a Puppy Pete that’s more “pocket-sized” Jessica Breitschwerdt reduced Pete to 50% (that’s half the original pattern size) and was still able to mostly sew it by machine. Tip: If you want to go below 50%, you’ll need to sew your toy by hand.

If you’d like a good “starter size” for your pattern re-sizing adventure, I suggest going up to 120% or down to 80%. Alison Darling made this rainbow Keep Me Keepsake Bear sewn at 80%, and then added some “cubs” at 60% and 50%. Tip: This is a great pic for comparing the difference between a 20% size change (rainbow bear to blue bear) and a 10% size change (blue bear to purple/pink bear) .

Re-sizing a pattern is a great way to sew a “mom and baby” toy pair like Glenda Newton did here with the Giddy Goat Pattern. It’s a great idea for a baby shower present or a play set gift for an older child. The mom goat here is at original size (100%) and the “kid” is a sweet 70%. Tip: If you’re new to reducing patterns, try to pick one that has relatively large pieces, like William Whale. Glenda found that the baby goat here required some intricate sewing due to the small hoof, ear, and horn pieces.

Super-sized toys make super-memorable birthday gifts. Diane Montague enlarged the Tristan Triceratops Pattern to 200% for her grandson’s 5th birthday. Here’s “grandpa” holding the toy for size reference.  I guess the family dog, lower right in pic, wasn’t too impressed!

At approximately 40%, this palm-size version of the Prince Charming Frog Pattern sewn by Carrie Davies-Bateman is pretty much life-size for a garden frog. I wonder if you get a life-size Prince Charming if you give him a kiss? (Tiny Toy Tip: If you want to sew a TINY toy by hand, consider using felt like Carrie did here.)
