How to sew your own homemade fabric dog toy!

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my new Poppy Puppy Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.
It is NOT A FREE PATTERN.

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this toy (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Poppy Puppy sewing pattern!)

First choose some fabric…

I sewed Poppy with quilting cottons but she would look amazing in most fabrics. I think she’d look awesome in faux fur – even just for her ears. You can sew Cuddles from most fabrics AND you can use any colour!

Right, let’s get sewing!

EARS:

STEP 1

Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs.

STEP 1b

Clip the curved seams very well and turn the EAR PIECES right sides out.

TIP: I like to use a wooden chopstick to help turn the seams. Run the end of the stick back and forth along the stitching inside the EAR PIECES until the seam is nice and smooth.

STEP 2

Fold the top of the EAR PIECES as shown by the pattern markings and pin,or tack (baste) them, so the pieces won’t slip as you sew the EARS in place.

STEP 3a

Pin the EARS in place using the pattern markings on the HEAD PIECES.

TIP: Make sure that the fold of the EAR is at the top when you pin it in position so that they will be facing the right way!

STEP 3b

Sew the EARS in place with a 3mm(⅛ inch) seam allowance. This will stop them from slipping as you sew the next step (and it will give the seam extra strength if the toy is for a young child that will tug on their doggy’s ears!).

HEAD:

STEP 4

Fold the HEAD PIECES at the ear darts, with the fabric right sides together and sew the ear darts closed with the EARS in between. (1 dart on each side – 2 darts).

TIP: Fold the EAR PIECES down and finger-press them flat to form a nice sharp point at the top.

STEP 5

Sew the HEAD PIECES to the FOREHEAD PIECE from A – B.

TIP: I find it’s easiest to pin AND sew one side first…

… then pin AND sew the other side.

SNOUT & CHIN:

STEP 6

Sew the SNOUT PIECE to the FOREHEAD & HEAD PIECES from C – D – C.

TIP: Take your time and use LOTS of pins so this seam is nice and SMOOTH!

STEP 7

Fold the SNOUT PIECE at the snout darts, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the snout darts closed. (1 dart on each side – 2 darts).

STEP 8

Sew the SNOUT closed from E – F and clip this seam well.

STEP 9

Sew the CHIN PIECE to the SNOUT PIECE from C – E – C.

TIP: This is an important seam because it is right in the front of your Puppy’s face. Use LOTS of pins and take your time to pin it well. Smooth out any puckers in the fabric pieces as you sew – to  prevent wrinkles forming!

EYES:

STEP 10

If you are using CRAFT EYES, insert them now. PLEASE NOTE: This Puppy has very big endearing eyes. I have included an 18mm EYE PIECE so you can cut a circle of felt this size and place it behind a smaller craft eye if you don’t have 18mm (¾inch) craft eyes!

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog.

CHEST, TUMMY & INNER LEGS:

STEP 11

Sew the CHEST PIECE to the TUMMY PIECE from L – H – L.

STEP 12

Sew the INNER FRONT LEG PIECES to the CHEST PIECE matching point L and the single dot pattern markings.

STEP 13

Sew the INNER BACK LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE matching point N and the double dots of the pattern markings.

BODY & OUTER LEGS:

STEP 14

Sew the OUTER FRONT LEG PIECES to the BODY PIECE matching point O and the single cross pattern markings.

STEP 15

Sew the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES to the BODY PIECE matching point P and the double cross of the pattern markings.

TAIL:

STEP 16

Sew the TAIL TOP PIECES to the TAIL TIP PIECES, matching the star pattern markings.

STEP 17a

Sew the TAIL TOP & TAIL TIP PIECES together, leaving them open at the top and at the stuffing gap.

STEP 17b

Trim the seams to 3mm(⅛ inch) at the ‘tip’ of the TAIL PIECES, turn the tail right sides out and pin the TAIL TOP PIECES closed at the top.

BODY:

STEP 18

Pin the TAIL to one of the BODY PIECES (with the fabric right sides together) using the pattern markings to guide you and sew the TAIL in place with a 3mm(⅛ inch) seam allowance.

I added the purple line in the photo below to show you
how the ‘tip’ of the TAIL should point DOWN and to the FRONT!

STEP 19

Sew the BODY PIECES together from J – K with the TAIL in between.

I have added the purple dashed line to show you where the TAIL is in between the BODY PIECES.

SEW THE SIDES:

STEP 20a

Sew your dog together at the sides in 3 steps – using the BODY SEWING DIAGRAM to guide you.

BODY-SEWING-DIAGRAM-1

Sew SEAM 1 (at the back) matching K, with the TAIL pushed out the way!

TIP: Take your time and use LOTS of pins so the pieces don’t slip as you sew.

STEP 20b

Sew SEAM 2 (at the front) from M, down the front legs, on both sides.

STEP 20c

Sew SEAM 3 (between the front and back legs) along both sides.

FOOT PADS:

STEP 21

Pin and sew the FOOT PADS to the bottom of the LEGS.

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to sew the FOOT PADS in place. Click HERE to check it out!

SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY:

STEP 22

Pin the SNOUT & CHIN & HEAD PIECES to the BODY & CHEST PIECE at the neck seam and sew the neck seam together from T – G – T.

TIP: I find the best way to do this is to place the head ‘inside’ the body so it is facing back into the dog’s body.

STEP 23

Pull the head ‘back out’ of the body and sew the FOREHEAD PIECE, HEAD & BODY PIECES closed along the back from S – B – T – Q, leaving the gap open for turning the dog’s (on the BODY PIECES as shown on the pattern markings).

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 24

Clip all the seams well, especially the curved parts then turn your dog right sides out. Stuff the SNOUT and HEAD area very well then stuff the foot area of all of the LEGS next. When they are firmly stuffed, stuff the tops of the legs very firmly, then finish stuffing the rest of the BODY and the TAIL.

MOUTH & NOSE:

STEP 25a

With black embroidery thread, sew a line of small stitches along the seam between the snout darts…

(The starting knot will be hidden under the nose!)

STEP 25b

Then sew a long straight stitch between F and E.

STEP 26

Sew the NOSE PIECE on the SNOUT PIECE so it covers the seam at F. (Hide the start and finishing knots under the NOSE PIECE!)

STEP 27a

Use a piece of ½ inch ribbon for a collar. Pin it around the neck, to get the correct size, then hand-sew or glue it in place.

STEP 27b

Use ¼ inch ribbon to tie 2 little bows and glue them in place, at the top of the ears.

STEP 28

Sew the stuffing gaps, on the BODY PIECES and TAIL PIECES, closed with a ladder stitch.
