How to sew a Sausage Dog Toy Pattern

Sew your own dachshund stuffed toy – everyone loves a Dachshund!

This pattern includes 2 options:

The dachshund sewing pattern includes Dixie with her tail down. Her brother Digger has a cute upright ‘puppy’ tail. Now you can sew a sweet pair of Sausage Dog siblings!!!

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Dachshund Sewing Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.

It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Dachshund Sewing Pattern can SEE how to sew a dachshund toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Digger & Dixie Dachshund Sewing Pattern)

First choose some dachshund fabric:

STEP 1

A dachshund toy will look great in any fabric… and ANY COLOUR!

AND…

it’s quite fun to use dachshund fabric for your dogs if you can find it!

EARS:

STEP 2a

Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-005

STEP 2b

Turn the EARS right sides out and pin them closed at the straight edge.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-008

TIP: I use a chopstick to push the seams out nicely.  Run the end of the chopstick along the seam from inside the EARS.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-013

TAIL:

STEP 3a

Use the LONG TAIL PIECE if you want your Dachshund to have a long tail which hangs downwards. Use the SHORT TAIL PIECE if you want your doggy to have a short ‘puppy’ tail that sticks straight up.

Sew the TAIL PIECES together. If you are sewing a LONG TAIL remember to leave the turning gap so it is easier to turn and stuff.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-014

STEP 3b

Trim the seam allowance at the tip, then turn the TAIL right sides out!

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-018

TIP: The SHORT TAIL is a small and skinny and can be hard to turn. I have a blog post to show you how to turn small softie pieces.

STEP 3c

If you are making a SHORT TAIL stuff it with toy stuffing now. Pin the TAIL closed at the straight edge.

HEAD:

STEP 4

Sew the HEAD PIECES together at the front from A-B.

Dachshund Photo tutorial 025

STEP 5

Pin the EARS in place on the HEAD PIECES, using the pattern markings to guide you.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-031

STEP 6

Pin the GUSSET PIECE to the HEAD PIECES matching A and C, with the EARS sandwiched in between. This is an important seam so take your time and use lots of pins.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-033b

TIP: Use safety pins to pin the EARS out of the way as you sew. (You can see the safety pin the in the middle photo above).

STEP 7

Sew the GUSSET PIECE to the HEAD PIECES. Sew a zig-zag along this seam allowance where the EARS are to give the seam extra strength if the toy is for a young child that will tug on their doggy’s ears!

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-055

STEP 8

Clip the seams well, especially around the nose area, then turn the HEAD right sides out.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-054

STEP 9

Fold the HEAD PIECES using the pattern markings to guide you and sew the neck darts closed, 2 on each side makes 4 darts.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-056

STEP 10

If you are using CRAFT EYES or BUTTONS, attach them now.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-064

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog.

Sew the OUTER FRONT LEG PIECES to the BODY PIECES matching the single dot pattern markings.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-075

STEP 12

Sew the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES to the BODY PIECES matching the double dots pattern marking.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-078

STEP 13a

Fold the BODY PIECES and sew the neck darts closed, 1 dart on each BODY PIECE makes 2 darts!

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-080

STEP 13b

Fold the BODY PIECES again, and sew the body darts closed, 1 dart on each BODY PIECE makes 2 darts!

* I forgot to take a photo of me sewing this dart but the red arrow, in the photo below, is pointing to the body dart and the dotted line shows you where to fold the BODY PIECE.

STEP 14a

Pin the TAIL in position on one of the BODY PIECES.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-085

STEP 14b

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-088

STEP 15

Sew the CHEST PIECE to the TUMMY PIECE, leaving the gap open for turning

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-098

STEP 16a

Sew the INNER FRONT LEG PIECES to the CHEST PIECES matching the single cross pattern markings.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-102

STEP 16b

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-110

STEP 17b

2. Pin the BODY PIECES to the TUMMY PIECES at the back seam, matching point G. Pin the INNER BACK LEG PIECES to the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES at the back seam, matching point M. Sew the back seams from M – G on both sides.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-117

STEP 17c

3. Pin the BODY PIECES to the CHEST & TUMMY PIECES at the side seam. Pin the INNER and OUTER LEG PIECES together matching points N and O. Sew the side seams from N – O on both sides.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-122

FOOT PADS:

STEP 18

Pin the FOOT PADS to the LEG PIECES and sew them in place.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-124

TIP: I have a tutorial on my blog to show you how to sew perfect plushie feet – it’s easy when you know how!

How to sew perfect plushie feet!

SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY:

STEP 19

Pin and sew the GUSSET & HEAD PIECES to the CHEST & BODY PIECES at the neck. Use lots of pins to hold all the pieces in place as you sew.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-140

TIP: I find the best way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it ‘inside the body’ – see the black arrow in the photo below.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-130b

STEP 20

Pull the HEAD back out of the BODY so the pieces are wrong sides out again. Pin the Dachshund closed at the back of the neck and sew this closed from P (on the GUSSET PIECE) – D – E (on the BODY PIECES).

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-145

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 21

Turn the Dachshund right sides out through the turning gap.

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-147

STEP 22

Stuff the nose area then the head and neck really well. Stuff the chest, front legs, back legs and ‘rump’ area next. Finally stuff the tummy area last. Make sure the nose and face are stuffed really firmly so that it makes it easy to sew the NOSE on.

***If you used the LONG TAIL PIECES, stuff them with toy stuffing now.***

Dachshund-Photo-tutorial-149

FACE:

STEP 23

Cut the NOSE PIECE from felt and pin this in position. Sew the NOSE in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch.

*** If you are embroidering the eyes, sew them now.***

COLLAR:

STEP 24

Cut a 30cm (12inch) piece of ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around your doggy’s neck and hand sew or glue it in position.

STEP 25

Sew the gap on the CHEST&TUMMY PIECE and TAIL PIECES closed with a ladder stitch.
