FAQ: How To Print a PDF Sewing Pattern

Do you want to know how to print a PDF sewing pattern the correct size on the first try? Do you need help troubleshooting printer problems? We’ve answered all your printer questions in this set of printing FAQs so you will know exactly…

how to PRINT perfectly~>
EVERY TIME!

🖨️ Question 1. How do I know if the pattern printed the right size?

ANSWER: Easy! Make sure you do these 2 things when you print a PDF:

1. First, save the file to your device. Don’t immediately hit “print” on the browser window. (Why not? This will cut off the bottom of each page.) Instead, download the PDF pattern and  save the file to your device. Then open the PDF in a PDF viewer and you can hit “print” properly.

don’t print from the internet browser window!

This is a screenshot of WHERE to find the Download PDF Patterns you’ve bought on the Funky Friends Factory website. Make sure to save the file to your device (DON’T just open the file in a browser window such as Chrome, Safari, etc.)

2. Second, make sure you print at 100%. Don’t use a setting called “fit to page.” WHY? Because this will resize the pieces to different sizes on each page (meaning pieces don’t fit).

Here’s the printer dialogue window:
The percentage box is circled.

🖨️ Question 2: Why isn’t there a one inch test square on the pattern page?

ANSWER: You don’t need to worry about a 1 inch square with Funky Friends Factory patterns. WHY? Because they are FULL-SIZE patterns (ready to print at 100%). So there is no need to resize them to “get them to print the correct size” – they are already the correct size! 😁 Just make sure to print at 100% and you will have the right size!

🖨️ QUESTION 3. What size of paper do I need to use?

ANSWER: Use the standard printer paper size for your country (ie, the paper in the main tray for your printer). The PDF software will recognize the paper size and print the pattern correctly as long as you print at 100%. WHY? Because the Funky Friends Factory pattern pieces have been carefully laid out to fit  within the printable area of BOTH the USA letter size AND international A4 page.

🖨️ QUESTION 4. My pattern is cut off on the bottom of each page. What is going wrong?

ANSWER: From my experience, this happens when people have tried to print the PDF patterns straight from the internet browser window instead of saving the pattern file to their device. To fix this, save the file to your device, then open it and print at 100%. Too EASY!

🖨️ QUESTION 5. What should I do if the options above don’t work?

ANSWER: There is a LAST RESORT TACTIC! If the PDF Pattern still doesn’t print correctly there is a last resort – you can use your printer’s ADVANCED  settings. Open the print settings window and click on “Advanced” (See the blue arrow in the screenshot below).

Then check the box for the “Print as image” option (See the green arrow in the next photo). ALSO check that you are still printing at 100% – this will print the page without resizing it.

🖨️ QUESTION 6. I don’t have PDF file software. Where do I get it? Or update it?

ANSWER:  Adobe is the most common PDF viewer. It comes pre-installed on most devices.

🖨️ QUESTION 7. I have an unusual printer that doesn’t match the info above. What can I do?

ANSWER: Google is a great way to find operator manuals to download. Try the website for your printer brand. YouTube may also have videos on how to solve problems with your specific printer model.

🖨️QUESTION 8. Can I print the pdf pattern bigger or smaller on my home printer?

ANSWER: Yes! Click HERE to go to the “How to resize a pattern” blog post! 🥳
