I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Hedgehog Sewing Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!
*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!
I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this stuffed toy hedgehog! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Hannah Hedgehog toy sewing pattern!)
Choose some fabric to sew a hedgehog!
Hannah Hedgehog does not need to be BROWN – she will look great in ALL sorts of colours! I had this adorable Melly & Me Pinwheels fabric from Riley Blake and teamed it up with some brown blue and pink fabrics for my hedgehog.
Let’s start with some spikes!
STEP 1
Sew the SPIKE PIECES together from A – B.
STEP 2
Trim the fabric at the tip of each spikes and clip the seams between the spikes. This will help them to turn better so they will be nice and pointy!
STEP 3
Turn the SPIKE PIECES right sides out and make sure the spikes are turn out well so they are nice and pointy.
TIP: I like to use my wooden chopstick to help me with the spikes. Make sure you don’t push too hard and burst the seam. 🙁
NOW for some cute hedgehog ears!
STEP 4
Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs, leaving the flat edge open for turning.
STEP 5
Turn the ears right sides out then fold them using the pattern markings to guide you. Make sure you have a right and a left ear!
Now for the SIDES:
STEP 6
Pin the SIDE PIECES together, at the front, from A- C.
STEP 7
Sewthe SIDE PIECES together, at the front then trim the fabric at the end of the ‘nose’. (Again, this helps to make the fabric turn nicely!)
STEP 8
Turn the SIDE PIECES right sides out.
STEP 9
Pin the EARS to the SIDE PIECES with the fold touching the right side of the fabric of the SIDE PIECES. Use the pattern markings to guide you with their position.
STEP 10
Sew the EARS to the SIDE PIECES using a very small seam allowance of 3mm (1/8 inch). You can tack(baste) them in place by hand if you prefer.
STEP 11
When you pin the OUTER LEG PIECES to the SIDE PIECES lay the pieces in position and check that the longer legs are in the FRONT!!! 😀
STEP 12
Pin the OUTER LEG PIECES to the SIDE PIECES, matching the dots of the pattern markings and with the fabric right sides together of course! (You can see I have also pinned the OUTER LEG PIECES on the other SIDE PIECE in the photo below.) Sew all the OUTER LEG PIECES in place.
Add some toy eyes:
STEP 13
If you are using Craft eyes insert them now. I have used 18mm black craft eyes for Hannah. (You can embroider Hannah’s eyes later on when you stuff her.)
TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog.
Next a spotted TUMMY!
STEP 14
When you pin the INNER LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE lay the pieces in position and check that the longer legs are in the FRONT!!! 😀
TIP: In the pattern, the TUMMY PIECE is cut from the same fabric as the SPIKE PIECES but you can always use a different fabric for it like I did in this tutorial.
STEP 15
Pin and sew the INNER LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE, matching the dots of the pattern markings.
Joining the SIDES to the TUMMY:
STEP 16
I have laid out the pieces so you can see where we will be joining the SIDES PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE.
STEP 17
Pin and sew the SIDES PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE, matching point C and F. (Sew from F – C – F)
STEP 18
Pin the hedgehog together along the sides. Pin from E at the front to G at the back. Use LOTS of pins so the pieces don’t slip as you sew.
TIP: It would be easier to sew one side at a time, but I have done them together for the photo tutorial.
STEP 19
This is a close up photo of me sewing the INNER and OUTER FRONT LEG PIECES together.
TIP: Take it slow around the curves, leave the needle in the fabric, lift and turn your fabric to go ‘around the corners’ where the LEG PIECES join to the SIDE PIECES. * I have drawn a dotted arrow, in the photo below, to show you how to sew the ‘corners’.
TUMMY:
STEP 20
Pin and sew the TUMMY PIECES and SIDE PIECES together along the centre. Sew from D – G – B (on the SIDE PIECES) leaving a gap open on the TUMMY for stuffing the hedgehog.
STEP 21
Turn the pieces over – this is what the TUMMY should look like now!
STEP 22
Tuck the ARMS, LEGS and EARS in to the centre.
TIP: When you pin the SPIKE PIECES to the SIDE PIECES it is very easy to muddle the front and back of the SPIKE PIECES. I place 2 yellow pins in the SPIKE PIECES at A, so I know it’s the front and I don’t pin the SPIKES on backwards! 😀
STEP 23
Pin the SPIKE PIECES to the SIDE PIECES making sure to match A at the front and B at the back.
TURNING:
STEP 24
Turn the hedgehog right sides out through the gap left in the TUMMY PIECE.
STUFFING:
STEP 25
Stuff the ‘nose’ first, then the face area. Stuff the legs very firmly then stuff the rest of the body.
TIP: I pin the EARS to the SPIKE PIECES when I stuff the hedgehog so that the ears won’t flop forwards! If the ears STILL FLOP FORWARDS baste/tack them at the top so they stay back… or you Hedgehog will look a bit funny! (* see the purple dashed line in the photo below)
STEP 26
Go back and stuff the nose and face some more, it should be nice and firm. I use a child’s paint brush to push the toy stuffing in nice and firmly.
STEP 27
Cut the CHEEKS from pink felt and stitch these to the SIDE PIECES with a blanket stitch. (They will cover the pucker in the seam at E and looks pretty cute too!:D)
STEP 28
Draw a mouth for your hedgehog between the cheeks. (I used a fabric pen for this) Embroider the mouth using a back stitch.
STEP 29
Sew the opening on the Hedgehog’s TUMMY PIECE. closed using a ladder stitch.
