April 2024 MAKER OF THE MONTH – wins a FREE Funky Friends Factory Pattern!

Jun 26, 2024 | Blog, Competitions & Giveaways

What fabric can you use to make a stuffed animal or memory toy? How many types of fabrics can you combine in one toy? You’ll find fun answers to those questions in this edition of Maker of the Month! From single-garment memory bears to feathered and multi-fabric unicorns, you’ll see tons of fun toy examples in this post. There’s even a bear made from a 70-year old tablecloth! Read down to the end of the post to find out who won.

Let’s take a look…

This Lamkins Lamb was sewn in a plush fabric by Jo Ann Carroll. What a lovely color for a lamb, especially with the flowers matching the embroidery floss.

Did you notice the eyes centered in the flowers on the fleece fabric? That’s an excellent example of “fussy-cutting.” Big prints make fun toys! This Ellie Elephant was sewn by Jennifer Eggleton.

Double the fun! Laura Patterson used some extra fluffy fabric for these pastel, coordinated Easter Bunny Buddies.

Exquisite baby clothes provided the fabric for this floral delight, an Easter Bunny Buddy sewn by Laura Peters Cartoscelli.

Who needs spotted fabric when you’ve got an inspired fabric idea like this? Jason Stuart sewed this Raff Giraffe from geometric fabric.

Plattie Platypus Pattern was Eva Izdinska’s first Funky Friends Factory toy. Hooray! She took the free toy-making course and eventually made two gifts for her kids. If you’d like to take the free toy-making course, hit the HOME button at the top of this page and scroll down until you see the red monster toy labeled “Beginners start here.” Have fun!

Erica Woolmington has sewn lots of cute Easter gifts for her grandkids in the past, and this year was no exception. Look at this adorable family of Dilby ducks.

And this fluffy fellow a.k.a Dilby Duck, was sewn by Laura Oppelt.

Next up some ROARSOMNE dinosaur toys!

Kathleen Noble Mahan sewed this stunning Timmy T-Rex for her grandson, who looks ready to take him out to the park for some adventures. Maybe a dinosaur dig?

The new line of Tula Pink fabric called ROAR is perfect for sewing up colorful Funky Friends that appeal to all ages. Teresa Wavra sewed Trixie Triceratops. With ROAR fabric for a grandchild in college. She later paired it with a matching duffel bag for visits home.

What a delightful doll. Daisy is 18 inches tall and has removable outfits, but no possibility of tangled hair, so she’s a great option for little kids. Joy Davies sewed this Daisy DRESS UP Doll.

We had some super cute memory bears this month!

This Melody Memory Bear Pattern was sewn by Karla Bomlitz Pollina, and it was her FIRST Funky Friends Factory toy!

Look at all the fabulous details preserved on this Melody Memory Bear Pattern, which was sewn by Laura Breyley.

What a great idea for upcycling! This cheerful Melody Memory Bear Pattern was sewn by Becky Jones from a vintage tablecloth.

The Keep Me Keepsake Bear pattern gives you lots of options to integrate different types of fabrics into a single toy. This bear sewn by Kathy Provencher has a t-shirt logo on the tummy, cotton on the feet and arms, and fluffy fabric on the snout.

This Keep Me Keepsake Bear pattern was sewn by Lynn M. from a striped shirt. Sometimes just one fabric makes a great toy!

This Keep Me Keepsake Bear pattern was sewn by Jenny Holmes. The bear holds a lot of meaning, representing the life of a man who emigrated to America and loved working at the camp shown on the shirts. The bear incorporates an embroidered denim shirt on the tummy panel, a t-shirt from a summer camp staff member on the back, and American flag fabric on the footpads and ears.

This Buttons the BEST DRESSED Bear was sewn by Libby Kiel. I like how many different shirts were incorporated into this bear: striped white fabric, denim, and plaid.

This Buttons BEST DRESSED Bear was sewn by Lesley Fern. Those are some fancy buttons on the vest and cuffs!

So many bright and fun fabrics! I love all the details incorporated into these Kelsey Keepsake Unicorns sewn by Simone Von Drunen.

Looks like those are feathers making up the mane on this Kelsy Keepsake Unicorn sewn by Tracey Carter Devers. That would definitely be a challenge to sew!

Striped shirts turned into coordinating keepsakes with these Ben BEGINNER teddy bears sewn by Lagatha Been.
